Zero alcohol content

Well as much as I said that I needed some vodka to manage this, it happened without. I was so putting it off and making a big deal of it that I just put my movie on pause, got up and 'did it'.

I glued the back of the card, as I had said previously, on which I laid the parquet, knowing it would dry but believing that this would give an extra bite to the process. I noticed how MDF has a tendancy to suck up the glue quickly so this acted as a sort of barrier.
I then glued really quickly the floor, laid down the card and placed all the weights I had already calculated to weigh it all down all over.

So here at last and quite painlessly I add is the finished floor! Notice the join between the dining end and the main floor that appears to be a different colour. I will rectify this in daylight as I always seem to work at night in Ramsay House. The dark floor helps the pink walls somewhat.

I had cut the ceiling board, glued in a huge Sue Cook ceiling rose and painted it to match the rest.
It will only go in when the lights are fixed in and the blinds are made up and installed. The back blind has to go in now and the front side one can go on standby for now but I will make it at the same time. I have found a green silk shantung petticoat that I made for my wedding dinner in Mumbai that no longer fits ( it shrunk! A LOT !!  ) that will be the perfect colour.

I realised that instead of hanging the mirror above the fireplace I could put a painting there and the mirror where the painting was going to be. Time will tell. I never know in miniature builds if things have to be glued down and fixed in place or set and hung as in a real house ? What do the rest of you do. I do like the idea of changing the decor from time to time.

  1. ... and spectacularly beautiful it turned out! Sorry, can't help you with the glue/hanging questions, but I am curious too and will check and see if anyone else does.

    1. Thank you ! no idea why I made such a big thing about it all in the end. As what I used to call myself a 'newcomer' I realise that in doing you learn then get better and better. I see the whole house as one huge Lesson in patience and ingenuity with a possibly great outcome and then there is the FUN !!!! huggssss

  2. The floor looks beautiful and I am a huge fan of pink so am loving the combined hues! Perfection is a trick and it's in the doing that the real joy shows up. Anyone who has done a dollhouse has the judgy-ness taken right out of them (humility is such a valuable lesson) so just know that your audience knows how hard this stuff is and is amazed at your skill, vision and ability, especially for being the relative newcomer to the hobby that you are.

In small diorama type projects I tend to glue down the inexpensive minis. This is because I am easily frustrated at having to pick up and place things over and over, the wax always dries out and "fails" and because I know that if I use Tacky Glue that I can use my blow dryer to loosen the item and remove the glue residue easily with very minor damage from both the item and the surface. For my artisan minis I use wax and/or rubber cement and secure them extra well. Hope that helps give you some thoughts...

    1. Thank you Jodi dear and thank you again. I would love to meet some other miniaturists and have a chat about 'things' ! I live so isolated here and until now did not count myself as one. In the middle of the stair build, especially when I got the scale wrong in the beginning I didn't think that I had the patience to go forward. I Don't have anyone here to spur me on and tell me what they think which is why I began this blog. I am more confident now and can imagine going forward with the build, sort of auto suggestion ! Thanks for the tips, I will look into wax and rubber cement, for now I used 'bluetack' used to hang posters but its bulky. Quite a few of the minis I bought to decorate are sort of valuable or one offs. For the shelves I had the idea to cut out pieces of thin plastic ( food boxes ) and glue the things to that then place them into the shelves. It's an ongoing process full of challenges and finding solutions, in other words FUN !!! huggsssss

    2. I too have no RL mini-buddies nearby. When I first dappled in minis years and years ago, it was a very isolated affair. But now, having only just rediscovered mini making (I literally found an box of mini bits when cleaning out the shed) I am finding so much inspiration and encouragement in the online mini tribe. Including the Madness around here :-)

    3. Yes Anna, I too was surprised by the enthousiam and kindness of other miniaturists. I live very isolated in deed, it was a choice but in hindsight not the best idea! Hopefully when I move things will be better ,, huggsss

  3. It’s gorgeous. I love the view from front to back, with the different room sections and different wall treatments. So lovely. And brilliant work on the floor! Perfect!

    1. Thank you Shannon dear, yes I do like this view but it's the only room where this happens as in all the other rooms there is a dividing wall and the back room will only be seen from behind, well that's the plan for now ! Things can change in the next ten years it will take to finish ! xxx

    2. I think that adds to the interest. Different opening panels, views through windows, rooms that are different sizes and especially different depths. And yes, these projects tend to evolve!

    3. You are right there. I knew that a deeper house had to open also from the back for pratical reasons then I saw a large house that opened from the side also. There are also those who have a fixed front and a totally open back with no door ! That is what makes this interesting that there are so many possibilities and no set rules. I am already thinking of a hosue with much bigger rooms, higher ceiling etc but that idea might end up as a single room box ,,, but that is so far in the future !!! years and years ,,, especially if I have to move house next spring !! huggsss

  4. El piso te ha quedado perfecto y es precioso!!! Si realmente quieres cambiar de vez en cuando las cosas de sitio, entonces te aconsejo que uses un pegamento reposicionable.

  6. The pink is a beautiful choice, especially with the floor color. I have returned to miniatures after a 35 year gap. It wasn’t until I started redecorating the dollhouse I decorated with my daughters that I found that it is the perfect hobby for me. But at the time I didn’t know making miniatures was a thing, so my re-entry was with dollhouses. Naturally, with dollhouses, the furnishings can change. For those items that would be fixed in a real house, I glue them in. For items that are too tiny to position on a regular basis, I use museum wax, and for the actual furniture, I just position it and move things around from time to time.

    1. Hello miss Sherrill, yes I had no idea that miniature making was a thing either. In the beginning I bought some books but not the best ones and didn't really research much then I looked into the fairs and so forth and began to realise the scope of the hobby. A friend once said that there were probably hundreds of people interested in this hobby until I showed him the scale !! He had no idea. I am thrilled with the mentality of the many people who practice this hobby and their generosity of spirit and sharing. One day I will go to a miniiature fair, maybe London or at least in Europe and meet some of these people. Thanks for the museum wax idea, I didn't know about it. huggssss

  7. Dear Mrs. M. Do not worry, I drank the vodka for you. Well actualy it was a brandy, but stil. These two rooms come along very nicely. Initialy I was not about the pink colour you chose. (Although you have an expert eye for colour) but seeing it in a picture with daylight it all makes sense! And the parquet floor is stunning. 🤗

    1. Hello Mr H , well the pink was mainly for two reasons, the Library which is across that hall will be ochre and red so I couldn't use yellow twice and the pink also goes well with green which I wanted to introduce in drapes and pillows. I really Don't like things to 'match' too much as I find it offputting but as a theme it's different. When I finish the room I will hopefully have the courage and eyesight to make a rug to bind it all together too. huggsss
