Crumbling French beauty.

In a previous post called 'the Destruction of the Country House' I wrote of the disparition of many British country houses in the 20th century. Today I wanted to underline the same problem ongoing in France where thousands of the country's magnificent chateaux are being left to rot and fall down.
Many Chateaux have already either complety fallen down, been burnt or demolished.

Here are some for your 'appreciation'.

Some links, mainly in French.

Something ELSE !

To end this sad post on a fun but pathetic note here is something to make you smile.
An investor in Turkey decided to build some chateaux in the same way you would build regular housing for the masses. I have no idea what he was thinking that people would want to live in identical chateaux with no land but unfortunately for him he never managed to finish his project when the Turkish economy failled. There are 732 of these mock chateaux with a shopping center in the middle!

So would you choose to live in one of these 'Disney' versions or would you prefer a crumbling old French one?

  1. Holy moly! How did those 732 chateaux go unnoticed by the world?! This is the first time that I’m hearing about them. I don’t know why but they make me think of egg cartons. Strange, I know!

    1. Iris dear I think that egg cartons are stronger then these as they look quite badly made ! Its crazy to imagine the sort of people who would live there, messy gardens, old cars, washing hanging from the windows, generally trashed or maybe in the end jsut falling down or being used as a movie decor. The insides are horrible plain plasterboard, no charm! I found them by accident and thought that it was just photoshop ! I would rather live in a ruin than here ,, huggsss

    1. Yes it seems strange that no one stopped him before he made over 700 of them !! normally you sell them as you go to ensure that you are onto a good thing !!! Luckilly its in Turkey so not on our path !!! huggsss

  4. Haha! I would seriously love one. I’d probably relocate it but none the less, they look pretty fun to me. A whole township of them could be very confusing. With regard to crumbling mansions, it also breaks my heart to see 50-60-70+ year old homes demolished - what will be left in 40 years of architecture from those eras? And then all the modern homes that are only being built to last 50 years if that....

    1. These 'new' castles are terrible Inside ! Don't think that you would want one. I always dreamnt of living in say one room of a crumbling mansion with all the decay around me and an overgrown garden. My mother use to look after a 'lady' who lived in a small chateau in Scotland and she just used one room out of many ! huggssss
